Our History

In the Fall of 1966, a tiny mission congregation - made up of a just a handful of families - was born in Anchorage. Pastor David Zietlow was called to be Faith's first resident pastor in December, 1967.  Nineteen people attended the first church service which was held in a rented church.  In 1970 the church, in it's current location, was dedicated.

The congregation grew despite the fact that Anchorage had a very transient population with many church members in the military. Pastor James Oldfield began serving the congregation of Faith in 1992.

To reach out to our Hispanic speaking community the church called Pastor Stephen Mueller to serve as our Spanish Outreach Pastor in August of 2002.  The Hispanic congregation continues to grow. In 2012 Pastor Christopher Ewings took over leading the Hispanic congregation, Iglesia Luterana de fe en Cristo.

The two congregations are now both led by Pastor Ewings, this began in August of 2015.  We offer services in both English and Spanish.

Faith Lutheran opened its doors in 2010 to a growing group of Hmong Christians leading to the development of Hmong Lutheran Alaska.  They are led by Pastor Pao Moua every Sunday afternoon.

Faith Lutheran School has been a ministry of our congregation for four decades. We currently have a faculty of four full-time teachers: Principal Bryan Schneck, Mr. Tom Zarnstorff, Mrs. Cindy Zarnstorff and Mrs. Deanna Schneck. At present approximately 60 students are enrolled in grades K-8.

Faith Lutheran Preschool opened its doors on October 21, 2013. Ms. Rachel Wendland served as the first preschool director and was instrumental in developing the program.  Faith Lutheran Preschool opened with four students and quickly increased enrollment to full capacity.  Ms. Melissa Mittelstadt took over as director in July, 2015 and continues to serve our lambs.
